My Future Counter Offer

I was reading Penelope Trunks blog again yesterday at work and I read an interesting article about job promotions, raises and Generation Y. She had a list of different counter offers you could make if you were ever offered a raise or promotion. The one I liked the most and will probably be something I will ask for if I’m ever offered a raise or promotion is the “Flex-time opportunities” one.

Let me explain:

If I was offered per say a $1 raise that would be about $1920 more a year before taxes. Not very much and that wouldn’t benefit me or even my job for that matter. Instead I would ask if I could work from home 3-4 days a week and 2-3 days a week I can come in to do any work that may need to be done at the office. With my position a lot of the work can be done here as long as you have a good computer and an internet connection which is something I already possess. Not only would that benefit me by saving me $800 a month on childcare ($9600), but the company won’t be spending more money on paying me and I will still be able to do my work efficiently.

It sounds like a win win situation to me.

hmmm… interesting argument. i think that situation would work for most anyone with an office job. Sounds a little too perfect.

I think I will be forwarding that link on to some of my work colleagues. Thanks! I like those ideas too. A four percent pay rise these days doesn’t mean too much and it’s always good to consider the alternatives. Although, if I could go for the alternative AND get the pay rise…

You are very smart… a lot of women are moving towards that nowadays, and that’s true; flex-hours are the best way to work. I work from home as well, and I hardly ever have to leave the house anymore ^_^ Though I only got my dog to babysit ^_^
